July 07, 2018; ICTI Research Scholar, Kevin John, has been awarded the Commonwealth Scholarship, considered among the most prestigious awards in the world for international study and professional development. He is amoung the only four awardees from across the globe who received the Commonwealth Durham Scholarship 2018-19. He will be studying MSc New and Renewable Energy at Durham University in the United Kingdom.
Kevin received the United Kingdom Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan Scholarship, which will cover all fees, to-and-fro travel, visa expenses and also provide monthly stipend, worth over Rs 3.5 million, during the 12 months Masters programme and research to be undertaken at Durham from October 2018.
As a Research Scholar at International Centre for Technological Innovations he gained opportunity to coordinate the Centre’s project in Sustainable Transport. He has been rewarded on the basis of his leadership skills while handling the project and commitment for sustainable development. “Transport has the lowest renewable energy share of any sector, making progress in this area crucial for transition to a sustainable energy system. India is about to embark on the most ambitious electric car transformation in the world. Presently more than 60% of country’s electricity comes from coal. By pushing electric vehicles in a big way, India's electricity needs are going to skyrocket. To achieve a sustainable transport system, India has to integrate electric vehicles with renewable energy sources.” says Kevin
In fact Kevin was selected for the Commonwealth Scholarship by 3 Universities. Besides Durham he was also offered scholarship by University of Bath and University of East Anglia. He however choose to join Masters Programme at Durham University, as he believes it would help him make a real difference in promoting renewable energy for electric vehicles and India’s sustainable development.
